Commodity trader Alkagesta took part in GTR Commodities 2026 in Geneva on 23 September, one of the main annual gatherings for the global commodity trade and trade finance community. Organised by Global Trade Review, the forum drew more than 600 senior professionals and over 50 speakers.
The company was represented by chief financial officer Orkhan Zeynalli and board member Pierre Gay, who spent the day meeting financial institutions, risk specialists and fellow market participants.
Volatility and corridor risk on the agenda
Discussions centred on how commodity trade is holding up amid continued disruption to key shipping corridors, and what that means for supply shocks, pricing and the deployment of trade finance. Speakers also examined financing strategies to restore stability in oil trade, including the longer-term effect on corridor risk models, trader funding costs and the appetite of banks and insurers for high-risk routes.
Liquidity, SMEs and compliance
Other sessions looked at how traders keep revolving credit facilities, working capital and margin calls under control when prices swing sharply. The structural financing barriers facing smaller commodity traders were another focus, alongside the niches where agile firms can still compete.
Supply chain resilience featured prominently: mapping exposures, diversifying sourcing and routes, and holding liquidity buffers against disruption. Panels on trade compliance covered sanctions monitoring, counterparty screening, export controls and the growing use of AI to detect trade fraud and verify documents.
Why it matters for Alkagesta
For Alkagesta, the forum offered direct contact with the lenders, insurers and risk professionals behind its global trading operations. The company said the event reinforced the value of financial agility, disciplined risk management and compliance-led execution as commodity markets stay volatile.
