Marine fuel diversification and the practical hurdles to scaling up decarbonisation were prominent topics at SIBCON 2026 in Singapore, according to a conference recap published by Alkagesta Media. The company said its delegation had completed a week of sessions and meetings involving participants from the global shipping and marine fuels sectors.
The discussions covered a shift towards using multiple fuels, with biofuels, methanol and LNG considered alongside conventional options for different vessel types and trade routes. Alkagesta linked those themes to its own expansion in sustainable fuels. Its account cited a five-year UCO feedstock offtake agreement and a multi-year arrangement for biofuel storage at Pantank in Antwerp as elements of that effort. The recap presented these agreements as examples of changes already taking place within its trading business.
Supply security was another recurring subject, the company reported. Participants discussed diversification as a means of managing risk by limiting reliance on any one source of fuel supply. In Alkagesta Media’s account, that approach was associated with improving operators’ resilience against a backdrop of continuing supply pressures in global energy markets. The emphasis therefore extended beyond fuel choice for decarbonisation to the reliability of supplies available to shipping operators.
Conference sessions also examined what would be required to take decarbonisation projects beyond trials and into commercial operation. According to the recap, industry leaders identified clearer regulation, safety frameworks and financing access as important conditions for that transition. The account described these as enabling factors for moving from pilot programmes to wider deployment.
Alkagesta’s five-person delegation included founder and chief executive Orkhan Rustamov and representatives responsible for investments, APAC commodity trading, marine fuels distribution and trading. Outside the formal programme, the company said it met shipowners, bunker traders, customers, suppliers and other industry counterparts to maintain existing relationships and explore potential collaboration across APAC.
